We need better leaders. We need more of them.
The thinking patterns and behaviours that got us to here are insufficient to take us to where we need to go.
The world is getting faster and more complex. It’s getting harder to understand and operate in a world which is increasingly volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous.
And as always, people and organisations and countries that can adapt fastest to the evolving environment will win. Those that cannot adapt will lose and die.
Everything turns on leadership.
What is leadership? Leadership is a process for people, aligned with purpose, secured with trust, and delivering value.
Leadership is about understanding the world around you and making the best decisions possible. It’s about a relevant, meaningful and motivating purpose. It’s about ensuring progress. It’s about meeting individual needs and enabling a group to progress and succeed together.
Great leadership sets purpose. It is principled. It understands the world as best it can and develops strategies to survive and thrive. Great leaders shape the environment to help them win, and great leaders help others to excel and succeed. And more, great leaders create the conditions for winning cultures, the force-multiplier that allows teams to continually outperform competition.
Only 1 in 5 people received leadership training before being given leadership responsibility.
Most people learn leadership on the job.
And that’s a problem worth solving.
It’s hard for people to excel as leaders as they are usually unprepared for leadership responsibility, without training or experience.
Most people promoted into leadership roles haven’t had formal training. And it’s hard to have the experience if you’re new to the job, right? Unfortunately, leadership training and coaching isn’t available to most of us. Unless you’re in the military, leadership education is usually sterile and academic, once-off, and probably not tailored to your circumstances.
There are excellent resources out there and myriad examples of good and not-so-good leadership, but it’s hard to sort the good from the not so good, and even know what’s going to work best for your situation. And it’s really hard to find a coach who knows what you need to know, and doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.
And most organisations don’t invest in leadership unless you’re one of the people at the top.
But leadership isn’t just about the people at the top. Leadership has to exist at all levels of all organisations. We need great leaders at all levels, in all organisations.
What if all our people had leadership training early in their life?
What would be possible…?
